RAF Combined Mess : Spadeadam

About This Project

This fast track, new build project combines central mess facilities with new, modular living accommodation and public rooms for Officers, SNCO’s and Junior Ranks.

Situated in an isolated location on the North Cumbrian Fells, the site provides the only Electronic Warfare Tactics on the UK. It is a site rich in ecological value and nature conservation with five Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Built in close proximity to the historic Blue Streak Missile Display, the development is divided into three interlinked elements forming a modern focal building. In addition to the accommodation blocks, modern dining facilities for all ranks and civilians, the building is capable of hosting formal Mess and other functions.

Designed to meet the demanding functional and operational requirements of the DIO, the building creates an appropriate balance between the formal functions of a mess building and the informality of living accommodation. The interior design was developed by our in house team in conjunction with DIO and was inspired by the Regimental Colours.

Building on the site wide sustainability issues, the building utilises the benefits of modular off site construction and renewable energy resources including a solar pre heated hot water system.
