This project provides a ‘state of the art’, two storey extension to the existing single storey Woodston Primary School to accommodate an additional form of entry. The project consists of a new hall, eight additional classrooms and staff accommodation together with enhancements to the existing school building.
Natural daylight was seen as one of the most important aspects for successful teaching environments.
Principal features of the design are large windows to class bases and a light and airy, double height concourse. The use of varying floor levels, generous voids, glass balustrades and a glass lift integrate the new two storey building with the existing single storey Primary School.
Externally the ‘tree of life’, which adorns the wall which overlooks the playing field, has given the school a new identity. The extension echoes the materials and colours of the existing school building, coloured panels, however, introduce an element of joy.
Careful positioning of the extension has created a new sunken hard play area, and a wildlife pond without compromising the pitch areas.
During the design development a close working team was formed between Peterborough City Council, Woodston Primary School’s leadership team, architect and contractor when the project requirements were crystallised into the final scheme. The project team benefited from the considerable help and support of the Local Authority Planning, Building Control, Highways, Fire and Police liaison officers so that the scheme was delivered on programme and within budget.
